Overview
The Thimphu Tshechu is the largest festival in Bhutan, lasting for three days in the capital city, usually in September or October. The festival holds great significance in the lives of the Bhutanese, offering Buddhist followers a unique opportunity to purify themselves of negative karma and receive blessings. This grand celebration attracts thousands of Bhutanese and tourists to an open courtyard near the majestic Tashichho Dzong, a fortress-like structure. Each Tshechu is a momentous occasion for locals to dress in their finest attire, enjoy festive feasts, and celebrate in the joyous atmosphere after a season of hard work in the picturesque farmlands.
