When to Visit

A trip to Bhutan is possible all year round. Generally speaking, the best time of year to visit Bhutan is between March, April & May in spring and September, October & November in autumn. These months are an ideal time where several festivals take place and the weather is favourable with plenty of sunshine (flowers in full bloom in spring season and clear blue skies in autumn season).

Bhutan has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter similar to those of Western Europe. The climate varies from place to place with an altitude of 150m (492ft) to 7,570m (24,830ft), which is suitable for everyone from the hot sub-tropical climate in the south, temperate in the central, western and eastern regions and cold alpine slopes or peaks in the north. Each season has its own beauty, charm and festival to enjoy.

Spring (March to May) marks the start of Bhutan’s peak tourist season. Weather warms up and flowers bloom, making a botanist delight for rhododendrons, magnolias, wild azaleas and abundance of other wild flowers. You can still enjoy blue skies, a pleasant spring breeze, refreshing and chirping birds. Many tourists come to see the famous Paro Tshechu (festival) in western Bhutan, which usually lasts for five days. Some tourists travel to eastern Bhutan to see another popular Gomphukora Tshechu for three days, an occasion often used for dating of the people of eastern Bhutan that leads to marriages.

Summer (June to August) is the monsoon season in Bhutan. There really isn’t sort of intense rainfall all the time but weather can be sometimes misty. With about 72% of the country under forest cover, it turns to the lush green vegetation, weeping willows, glistening pinecones and wild orchids in bloom. Summer is also a chance to see the alpine Haa Summer Festival.

Autumn (September to November) is the best time to travel and busiest season of the year. Many festivals take place, and it is also the best time to trek in Bhutan. Autumn arrives in September with crystal clear blue skies, magnificent views of the high mountain peaks, merry pink & white cosmos and rice fields ripen to golden brown. It is also the time of the most popular Thimphu Drubchen and Tshechu in the capital city for four days and the sacred Jambay Lhakhang Drup naked dance at mid-night in Bumthang (central Bhutan) for four days.

Winter (December to February) is the season for majestic winter landscapes of the mountains and the valleys in the higher regions covered with snows. There is warm sunshine during the day while evening and night can turn quite chilly. One myth is that some European visitors say winter in Bhutan is not cold for them. Time your winter visit to Bhutan coinciding with the amazing one day Druk Wangyel (Dochula) Tshechu.
