Overview
Dochula Tshechu is held annually on 13th December at the Druk Wangyel Lhakhang Festival Ground, situated at the renowned Dochula Pass (3,050m). This picturesque venue, with its 108 Khangzang Chortens (Stupas), is about a 45-minute drive (22 km) from the capital city, Thimphu. Unlike most tshechus, which are typically performed by monks and laypeople, this unique one-day festival features performances by the Royal Bhutan Army. Initiated in 2011 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, the festival is a tribute to His Majesty the Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck and the Armed Forces. The dances performed during the festival are dramatic reenactments, celebrating the courage and heroism of His Majesty the Fourth King and the Bhutanese soldiers.
